Fish Bone Bead Workshop

Saturday May 31, 2025

|

Maple Ridge

Lead by Cheyenne Cunningham from Katzie First Nation

Join us for a unique hands-on beading workshop led by Cheyenne, a talented artist and proud member of the Katzie First Nation. In this session, you’ll learn the traditional art of transforming fish bones into beautiful, handcrafted beads, utilizing sustainable food harvesting practices that have been used by Indigenous peoples since time immemorial.

Cheyenne will guide you through the process of repurposing salmon vertebrae into handcrafted beads, while also cooking up the salmon for participants to try. Throughout the workshop, Cheyenne will share cultural teachings and introduce elements of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language, offering a meaningful connection to Indigenous knowledge and artistry. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced craftsperson, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to connect with Indigenous traditions and create your own meaningful piece of art.

All beading materials and light refreshments will be provided. Each person will craft their own pair of earrings. Come ready to learn, create, and connect!

Meet the Facilitator

ʔa∙ nə siʔəm̓ nə siyey̓ə Cheyenne θə nə skʷix, təli cən ʔəƛ̓ q̓íc̓əy̓ Hello, my relatives and friends, my name is Cheyenne, I am from Katzie First Nation. I am Coast Salish on my dad’s side and English on my mother’s side. My proposed research explores Katzie First Nation and territorial place names that have been identified in Suttles (1955) Katzie Ethnographic Notes. I seek to document and analyze Indigenous linguistic and relational knowledge embedded with geographic/physical landscapes and revealed through community engagement with the land and place (i.e., stories, cultural practices, such as harvesting knowledge and stewardship activities).
